Zen Clean Energy Solutions is a specialty consulting firm with more than 60 years of combined experience in the clean energy sector.  Zen works with clients to commercially advance and deploy clean energy solutions and technologies that promote sustainability.  While we work on a wide range of clean energy projects and technologies, more than 80% of our business is focused on serving the hydrogen and fuel cell sector.

Zen is focused on laying the foundation for the hydrogen economy in strategic regions around the world. This includes new hydrogen supply and distribution infrastructure to support early clusters of deployments in mature applications, while supporting demonstrations in emerging applications.

Since forming five years ago, Zen’s client base and business have grown steadily. With two Principals, ten staff, and a strong network of expert subcontractors in place, we are now ready to add to our team. Project Development Associate

Project Development Associate

Zen is looking to build our financial/economic capabilities by hiring an Associate within our project development vertical. Zen has a deep bench of clean technology engineering expertise, however many of our files require techno-economic modelling & analysis. The candidate should possess a strong financial background while demonstrating the capability to work on highly technical projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Project development for hydrogen generation, blending, distribution and dispensing applications
  • Project development for fuel cell electric utilization applications e.g. transportation, power generation
  • Successful candidate will be responsible for key activities within the project development vertical of the company including:
    • Development of project financials including proforma budgets, NPV and IRR calculations
    • Development of project schedules
    • Development of a project work plan
  • Creation of technical (e.g. emissions reductions), market adoption, and financial models, and the conduct of scenario and sensitivity analyses
  • Identify and win new business opportunities with both current and new clients to help us grow our business
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Report to Principals on progress of projects: schedule and milestone deliverables, obstacles and risk management, budget and profitability metrics
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to industry and government stakeholders to promote clean energy and demonstrate leadership in the sector
  • Must have some entrepreneurial skills to create substantive projects out of client ideas
  • Identify funding opportunities e.g. grants, subsidies, carbon pricing

Requirements:

  • Degree in Commerce, Economics, MBA or equivalent
  • Technical and financial knowledge with a priority on the financial aspect. Successful candidate will have a blend of both technical and commercial experience
  • Minimum 2 years work experience within the energy or technology sectors
  • Grant and proposal writing is a key component of this position. Strong technical writing skills (under time pressure) are a must
  • Good people skills, Capable of creating strategic partnerships
  • Strong financial and carbon accounting modelling competency
  • Experience managing budgets and developing financial models
  • Experience working on complex projects with multiple stakeholders
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and experience delivering presentations to senior audiences
  • Track record of showing initiative and leadership, results driven
  • Flexible ‘can-do’ attitude, excited about learning a wide variety of new subjects, willing to figure things out independently
  • Candidates must have a valid work permit, permanent residency, or citizenship in Canada
  • Able to travel

Engineering Associate

Engineering Associate

Responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate will play a large technical role in an internal development project underway at Zen. The project involves enhancing our proprietary Excel-based Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Route Energy Analysis Modelling Tool
    • Successful candidate will lead migration of the current Excel-based platform into a more use-friendly Python-based model
    • The team is also working to further develop the model to improve its accuracy, usability, and to adapt it for use with heavy-duty class 8 trucks. Successful candidate will work with Zen’s technical team to incorporate the new algorithms and functionality into the model
  • Work on multiple clean energy projects simultaneously at Zen, providing technical support as well as contributing to writing final reports and presentations
  • Develop technical (e.g. emissions reductions), market adoption, and financial models, and conduct scenario and sensitivity analyses
  • Technical writing support for client grant applications
  • Data analysis – vehicle fleet and infrastructure performance analysis and key performance indicator (KPI) reporting

Requirements:

  • Degree in engineering, preferably mechanical or electrical, or equivalent science degree
  • Minimum of 3 years work experience with track record of showing initiative and leadership. We are open to more experienced candidates as well
  • Experience with software development
    • Able to translate product requirements into software designs
    • Experience maintaining and debugging software systems
    • Experience with Python and relevant Python libraries (e.g., NumPy, Pandas, SciPy, PyQt)
    • Experience with GIT or other source control software
    • Strong knowledge of Excel
    • Knowledge of Computer Science fundamentals in algorithm design and problem-solving analysis
    • Ability to design UI mock-ups and produce functional code
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Flexible ‘can-do’ attitude, excited about learning a wide variety of new subjects, willing to figure things out independently
  • Demonstrated interest in the clean energy sector
  • Candidates must have a valid work permit, permanent residency, or citizenship in Canada
